On 20 March 2024, the European Commission (EC) adopted the second strategic plan for Horizon Europe, confirming the acceptance of the Graphene Flagship and Advanced Materials 2030 Initiative’s proposed Innovative Materials for EU partnership.

For the past decade, the Graphene Flagship, the EU’s largest ever research programme, has been coordinated from Chalmers with Jari Kinaret at the helm. As the project reaches the ten-year mark, expectations have been realised, a strong European research field on graphene has been established, and the journey will continue.

Over the last 10 years, the number of companies and industries involved in the Graphene Flagship increased considerably. Large companies, spin-offs and SMEs have come aboard our community as Graphene Flagship Partners or Associated Members.
Graphene Flagship’s annual conference, Graphene Week, will take place at Gothia Towers in Gothenburg, Sweden, 4 to 8 September 2023. The event will mark the 10-year anniversary of the Graphene Flagship and announces the results of a highly anticipated economic impact report. Results include a 14.5-fold return on initial investment and the creation of 81,000 jobs. The Graphene Flagship will present these findings at Graphene Week 2023, to register visit graphene-flagship.eu.
Trace amounts of graphene and other layered materials are often sufficient to enhance the properties of other materials. Graphene Flagship researchers add graphene to metals, plastics and other materials, to make them stronger, lighter, conductive and so forth.
