How We Work


The 2D Experimental Pilot Line (2D-EPL) is composed of six work packages that function as an independent division in the Graphene Flagship.

The goal of the 2D Experimental Pilot Line (2D-EPL) is to advance the production of GRM-based electronics, optoelectronics/photonics and electronic sensors beyond the laboratory scale towards industrialisation. As such, it builds an important bridge to facilitate the industrialisation of many of the technologies developed in the work packages and spearhead projects of the Graphene Flagship, as well as by other European and global customers who pursue the commercialisation of GRM-based electronic technologies. During the EC-supported period, the 2D Pilot Line will develop the processes and practices needed to produce GRM-based electronic and optoelectronic/photonic applications, and after the end of the publicly funded period, these services will continue to be provided on commercial terms.

2D Pilot Line is treated as a Graphene Flagship Division.

2D-EPL Work Packages

Wafer scale growth


Work Package 1: The goal of this work package is to scale up the growth of high-quality single crystalline graphene and related 2D materials to 300 mm substrates and to provide the 2D films for the Pilot Line processes.

Wafer scale transfer


Work Package 2: This work package is developing a generic module for the transfer of graphene and TMDCs that will be applicable to most applications.

Wafer scale integration


Work Package 3: This work package will optimise the functional integration of GRMs with the planarised target wafer and subsequent processes for the production of high-quality components.

Modules for the industry


Work Package 4: This work package will modify the generic processes developed in work package three to enable the different device concepts requested by 2D Pilot Line clients.

2D Pilot Line


Work Package 5: One of the main outcomes of the 2D Pilot Line project is the open access pilot manufacturing line providing multi project wafer (MPW) runs for academic, institutional and industrial customers to ensure rapid adaptation of the developed technology for the proof-of-concept testing of novel ideas.

Work Package 6: The goal of this work package is to implement the 2D Pilot Line Project in an efficient manner, to plan and coordinate its actions, coordinate its interaction with the Core 3 project, and manage connections within the Graphene Flagship and also stakeholders such as the European Commission.

Executive Board

The Executive Board (EB) is the steering group of the H2020 Framework Partnership Consortium.

Voting members are the six Work Package Leaders or Deputy Leaders, the Graphene Flagship Director and the Head of Innovation. The Science and Technology Officer of the 2D-EPL chairs the Executive Board.
